Making Melbourne a playable city
Millipede is partnering with artist Dr Troy Innocent and live arts collective one step at a time like this to transform Melbourne into a playable city.
64 Ways of Being is a free-to-play app that seeks to connect people and place at 64 locations across the city, via augmented reality encounters capturing different ways of being. These experiences re-imagine Melbourne's identity as expressed through its creative, linguistic, cultural, social and urban diversity.
As people and place come together, they engage in a conversation with the city – by following characters, activating architecture, discovering hidden worlds, playing with strangers, and talking with trees and rivers.
Launching in 2020, we’re currently recruiting play testers – follow @64waysofbeing to join our playtest in the Melbourne CBD.
This cutting edge creative project will bring together music, art, theatre and games technology to transform Melbourne into a giant playground. It will showcase why Victoria is the creative state – pushing the boundaries of technology, performance and experience. Ambitious creative projects like these are vital to our economy – attracting visitors, boosting business and supporting jobs.

64 Ways of Being works with the city as a material shaped by a blend of game design, public and live art. It makes Melbourne a playable city leading people into conversations about experience, place, language, knowing and being.

64 Ways of Being is an opportunity for Millipede to extend our players’ relationships with the city, through the creation of experiences that augment, reimagine, and sustain new conceptual spaces within Melbourne’s urban fabric. This forward-thinking collaboration brings together a unique blend of artistic disciplines to broaden the reach and remit of contemporary game design. The project allows Millipede to amplify and expand the experiences that we as game makers can bring to people’s lives, and to engage with the affordances of mobile technology in a fluid and poetic manner.

64 Ways of Being is an opportunity to extend our live art practice into new fields of gaming and mixed reality, while at the same time learning how to scale-up our intimate participatory practice to a broader audience.
